Why Tone Zone gyms are not currently accessible 24/7
It has been two months since the three Tone Zone facilities opened after a 65 day mandated shut down due to the Covid 19 quarantine. Many members have been inquiring about the guidelines that have been adopted to reopen the facilities that are located in Eagle River, Rhinelander and Minocqua.
Fitness gyms are unique entities during a pandemic. By the very nature in which they are used, heightened opportunities of virus spread is a real possibility. To reopen the gyms safely, guidelines set forth by the Wisconsin Economic Development Center have been adopted as we feel they provide the safest protocols to follow so the facilities can avoid further closings.
One of the restrictions was limiting the hours the gyms are available to only staffed hours. The reasons for this decision are numerous and many members have questioned the purpose of this particular guideline. Here are the foremost reasons why, at this particular time, the gyms are only open during staffed hours.
1. Sanitation.
Currently we ask gym users to take responsibility for sanitizing the equipment before and after their workout and disinfectant is provided for this purpose. Tone Zone staff work diligently to keep the gyms sanitized numerous times throughout the day but we also rely on members to wipe down equipment as they use it. Unfortunately this does not always happen. Members are encouraged to be mindful of this practice for the safety of everyone. When a staff member witnesses a lapse, more often than not they will pick up the slack and make sure the equipment is disinfected for the next user by sanitizing it themselves.
Scientific data suggests Covid can be asymptomatic, meaning a person can be shedding the virus while not knowing they have it. If such a member were to visit the gym during unstaffed hours and lapse in their sanitation practices, the potential for spreading the disease is exponentially increased as other users handle that same equipment. This is a scenario we are working diligently to avoid.
2. Contact tracing.

One of the ways experts advise curbing the spread of Covid is contact tracing. We have always required that members either scan their key cards or check in at the desk when they visit any Tone Zone. Unfortunately there are lapses in this practice also. We realize people can be preoccupied when they enter the gym and forget to scan their card or check in but during these pandemic times it is essential this practice is adhered to and monitored. If a person were to visit the gym and then subsequently test positive for the virus, it is our duty to inform members that have used that facility of this. This can only be accomplished if we have a record of ALL the members that visited on any particular day. If a person were to come to the gym during unstaffed hours and forget to sign in they could not be informed of this discovery, negating their choice to decide for their own health reasons how they wanted to proceed and, in addition, create a potential liability issue.
3. Clientele age diversity.
All three Tone Zone facilities cater to a wide variety of gym users from people in their 80s and 90s, to young folks in their 20s and late teens. Each age group carries its own statistics on rates of infection, hospitalization, death and spread. With this in mind we feel the gyms are the safest when staff members are present to keep the gyms consistently and thoroughly sanitized for all members that use the facilities.
4. Staffing restrictions.
The Tone Zone gyms are not heavily staffed and at this time to hire more staff to accommodate longer hours is not feasible. Already we have extended and changed staff shifts to accommodate the hours we are open. Our goal is to remain operating during the current designated hours so the trained staff on board can provide the safest environment possible to avoid another shutdown.
5. Masks
At this time we are not requiring our members to wear masks while working out however members are required to wear them when entering or exiting the malls or gyms where applicable. Members can certainly wear masks if they want during their workouts but our staff is hyper sensitive to keeping equipment sanitized and practicing and encouraging social distancing. This would not be possible during unstaffed hours. If one of the gyms were to be pinpointed as a “hot spot” we would be forced to shut the facility down for a quarantine period or require members to wear masks at all times while they work out.
6. Social distancing

Currently the capacity for all the Tone Zones is 50 percent. This is to make sure members have the space to social distance which is an important factor in preventing the spread of the virus. This has to be monitored by staff members and could not be done adequately if the gym was not staffed.
We realize these are confusing times for all of us. Many options we took for granted before Covid have been taken away and we are left to navigate during a period in history that is unprecedented. However, with Covid numbers continuing to rise in northern Wisconsin, the Tone Zone staff strives to keep our members, and community, safe by doing its best to provide facilities that are welcoming and healthy for all. Limiting hours to staffed only is one way we feel we can accomplish this.
Respectfully we ask for your patience and tolerance during this time. The Tone Zone family realizes your frustration but is grateful that the decision to reopen the gyms was made however restrictive the protocols.
Hopefully by complying with these guidelines we can remain open and avoid further closings.
Thank you.
